Elevating Wood Naturally with Heat and Steam

About Thermally Modified Wood

With our unwavering commitment to superior sourcing standards, this simple yet powerful combination is all it takes to craft unparalleled products, redefining the benchmarks for rot resistance, durability, and eco-friendly products.

How does thermal modification work?

PHASE 1

Temperature Increase

Within the modification kiln, the temperature ascends, expelling a substantial portion of pitch and sap from the wood. Introducing steam serves the purpose of averting checking in the heightened heat. Consequently, the moisture content of the wood undergoes reduction, transitioning from 15-20% to nearly zero.

PHASE 2

Thermal Modification

The modification kiln operates by excluding oxygen and attaining peak temperatures. In this environment of high heat and oxygen deprivation, hydrolysis occurs—resulting in the separation of the bond between H2O and the wood's hemicellulose. This transformative phase is where thermal modification takes place.

PHASE 3

Cooling & Re-Conditioning

The introduction of steam serves to lower the temperature. This steam, in turn, cools and conditions the wood, bringing its moisture content to a range of 4-6%. This process enhances the dimensional stability of the wood.

Benefits of Thermal Modification

Unmatched Stability

The thermal modification process removes all moisture from the wood cells, making it highly stable and resistant to warping, twisting, and bowing.

Enhanced Durability

The thermal modification process also enhances the wood’s natural durability, making it more resistant to rot, decay, and insect damage.

Easy Installation

Thermally modified wood is light and easy to install This means that you can have your walls and ceilings transformed quickly.

Better Insulating Qualities

The heat and sound insulation of thermally modified wood is superior to that of natural wood by as much as 30%.

Sustainable and Chemical Free

Every piece of thermally modified wood is 100% FSC-certified, meaning that it follows the most strict environmental requirements in the world.

Stylish Design

With unique species and stains to choose from, Thermally modified wood offers a stylish and modern design aesthetic that will enhance the beauty and value of any space.
